The Experience

The Berkshire Hills Music Academy offers a summer music therapy program where individuals with special learning needs make friends, have fun, and develop their musical interests and skills. Under the encouraging guidance of our exceptional staff of music therapists, professional musicians and residential assistants, participants have an opportunity to try a variety of musical and enrichment activities.

Philosophy

Attending the summer music therapy program offers a chance for children who enjoy making music to experience a wide variety of instruments and styles. Board-certified music therapists will work with children in both group and individual settings focused on encouraging musical growth, social skills, attentiveness, and movement skills in a fun and motivating environment. This success-based program will inspire children by providing the experience of achievement in music, both individually and with peers.

Staff

Our experienced staff of music therapists, teachers, recreation leaders, and residential support staff are drawn largely from the regular full-time staff of Berkshire Hills Music Academy. Many staff members have graduate or professional degrees. Our music instructors are all seasoned performers with a special skill for fostering the musical talents of children with learning or developmental disabilities.  All music therapists and music instructors have a great deal of experience in providing music instruction.

Program

The Summer Music Therapy Program is musical, growth oriented, and recreational.  Each child will participate in a 30 minute individual music exploration session per full day, facilitated by a board-certified music therapist.  Children will also participate in three small groups focused on group singing and voice exploration, instrumental experiences, and music and movement each day.  The program will culminate in an opportunity to showcase what students have been working on in their groups.

Parents will be able to network with each other during off campus outings and free time.  During the afternoons, parents will be on campus in order to experience various activities with their children as well as participating in a variety of panel discussions geared towards helping parents encourage the musical growth of their child.

Fitness and recreational activities will include dance class, horseback riding, outdoor games, arts and crafts and live performances.

Facilities

Berkshire Hills Music Academy is situated on a 40-acre estate in the rolling countryside of the Connecticut River Valley. The estate consists of a large renovated mansion, professionally landscaped grounds with many specimen trees, and a large lawn with beautiful views of the Holyoke Range. The building houses a modern computer lab with seven stations, a professional digital audio video project studio, a well-equipped fitness center, and music practice rooms. Pianos, digital keyboards, and drum sets are available for supervised student use.

Cultural Resources

Berkshire Hills Music Academy is located in the middle of the “Five Colleges” region. Mount Holyoke College is within walking distance. Smith College in Northampton, as well as Hampshire College, Amherst College, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, are all a short distance away by public transportation, and ensure a rich, diverse, and prolific menu of cultural opportunities. Swimming facilities are also available.

Accommodations and Meals

Men’s and women’s dorms are located on the second-floor of the main building. Parent and child will stay together in dorm rooms; there will be separate housing for “Dad & child” and “Mom & child”.  Each dorm has a modern, dormitory-style bathroom. Most rooms are double-occupancy and nutritious meals are served family style in the Academy’s dining room.

Health and Safety

Overnight staff ensures the safety and comfort of visitors.  The building features state of the art security, smoke and fire alarms, and sprinkler system. A unique feature is a special fire alarm, designed to meet the needs of individuals with sensitive ears. Numerous staff members are Red Cross certified for first aid, CPR, and medication administration. A nurse will be on call during the program.

Eligibility

This program is intended for children, ages 7-11, with learning and developmental disabilities who have a high interest in exploring music.

In addition to an interest in music, applicants to the summer program must have basic self-care skills, display consistently positive social behavior, and exhibit manageable group behavior skills.
