Life Skills Instructor- Full Time
Instructor will provide instruction to students in small groups as well as individually. You will be teaching banking, budgeting, cooking and other life skills. Please have a Masters Degree in Special Educations and/or a Bachelors Degree and five years of experience teaching life skills.
Board Certified Music Therapist-Part Time
Applicants must have proficient accompaniment skills in piano, guitar and voice. Must be able to work with both groups and individual students. The ability to plan, organize and facilitate lessons is preferred. Experience working with students with significant special needs as well as autism spectrum disorders is highly preferred.
Residential Advisor-Full Time
This is a full time 40 hour per week position, with the majority of work hours being evenings and weekends. Advisor will provide direct care and instruction in life skills to students and assist with achieving students personal goals. Previous experience working with individuals with special needs is preferred.
Residential Assistant-Part Time
Assistants support students in learning a wide variety of life skills. The assistant works under the direction of the Residential Director, Hours are flexible but are mainly evenings and weekends with options for overnight asleep hours.
Previous experience working with individuals with special needs is preferred.
Drum Instructor
Individual must be skilled on drum kit, hand percussion, world music and facilitating ensembles. Previous experience working with individuals with special needs preferred.
Current CPR, First Aid and MAP Certification desirable.

By sharing their skills, volunteers add variety and enrichment to the Academy's programs and help our students reach their full potential as independent adults. Our volunteers include community members, college students, retirees, local musicians, teachers, and parents. The Academy also participates in the Best Buddies Program, UMASS' Boltwood Project, and Mount Holyoke's Second Saturday program. Here are some of the ways you can help:
- Work as a teaching assistant/aide or tutor in our academic program.
- Lead informal activities, such as games, musical jam sessions, art and cooking projects.
- Help residential staff facilitate cooking, laundry, room maintenance, banking and other life skills.
- Serve as a mentor and companion for individual or small group exercise, such as walking, fitness room, biking, and outdoor games. Supervise students at Kendall Pool at Mount Holyoke College.
- Bring your own musical or dance group to perform for our students.
- Perform as an accompanist for special performances, rehearsals, and individual practice sessions.
- Assist students in our computer lab with basic computer skills, exploring the internet, email, etc.
- Help individual students to focus during independent practice sessions (no formal music training necessary).
- Assist the front office staff with such administrative tasks as answering phones, photocopying, stuffing envelopes, etc.
