Student Activities
Each week, our residential staff posts a schedule of activities, complete with any associated costs so students can effectively budget and prepare for their week ahead. A plethora of on-campus and off-campus activities help to promote decision making skills while further enriching students' experience here at Berkshire Hills and preparing them for a high quality of life. Weekend activities are wholly optional and based on student sign-ups.
On campus, for example, our students have participated in air-hockey tournaments, film club, Wii tournaments, open-mic nights, scarecrow-making, and special event dances. Off campus, they have attended concerts at each of the Five College campuses, holiday festivals and other seasonal activities (including hay rides, pumpkin picking, and holiday light displays), craft fairs in surrounding communities, Five College sporting events, community theater performances, trips to local flea markets, shopping centers, animal shelters, and much more.
Breakfast Club
Saturday mornings, students have the option of participating in our staff-supported Breakfast Club in the student kitchen. Here, students have the opportunity to make their own hot breakfast in a relaxed social setting.
Film Club
Film club is a student run group. Assisted by a staff member, one of our students facilitates this weekly activity with the choice of the movie and direction of lively discussion afterward.
Men's Group
In this group male students discuss with male staff the emotional and social issues and topics that they seek more guidance around. The group also plans activities that facilitate healthy friendships among the men of our school, including movies, sports, and dinner outings.
Pioneer Valley Therapeutic Riding Association
For an additional fee, students have the opportunity to take weekly lessons with the staff of the Pioneer Valley Therapeutic Riding Association (PVTRA), located in nearby Belchertown. In the past, students who have received lessons have also been given the chance to showcase their skills at local horse shows in which PVTRA participates.
Self-Advocacy
This group promotes students’ understanding of their rights and self-efficacy in the defense of Human Rights issues. Student facilitated discussions cover issues ranging from respecting personal space and property, to promoting a more inclusive environment for students of all ages and backgrounds.
Special Olympics
BHMA proudly takes part in Special Olympics of Massachusetts, and over the years our athletes have earned many medals. The team sports offered are soccer in the fall, basketball and bowling in the winter, and track & field in the spring.
Student Council
The Academy's Student Council has become a focal point for students and staff alike. Students are encouraged to voice opinions, respect others, abide by majority rule, and help make the Academy work well as a community.
Sunday Morning Breakfast Outings
Weather-permitting, each week our students enhance their confidence to safely navigate public transportation as they are accompanied by staff on PVTA's Five College Bus to surrounding communities on a breakfast outing. Our goal is for the students to maximize their ability to travel safely and independently using the resources of our community.
Women’s Group
Female students are invited to participate in Women’s Group, where they can discuss women’s issues and host student-driven, feminine-focused activities—which have included in the past cinema therapy nights, spa nights, and baking parties.
Yoga
For an additional fee, students are invited to join an experienced instructor on Saturday afternoons for an hour long on-campus yoga session. This popular program has had to relocate from our large dining room to our spacious great room to fit all of the participants.
