Berkshire Hills Music Academy, a small private post-secondary school in South Hadley serving young adults with special learning needs who are musically talented, has an immediate opening for Residential Assistants. The Residential Assistant is responsible for overseeing students’ daily activities as assigned by the Director of Residential Life. Residential Assistants model appropriate behavior both on campus and during community outings. They are also responsible for promoting independence by assisting with daily living skills, reinforcing appropriate social relationships, and assisting students with community awareness and safety.
Education Requirements: High School Diploma required.
Minimum Experience Required: Experience with and/or sensitivity to individuals with special needs.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Effective judgment and decision-making skills
• Certified in or able to obtain CPR, First Aid, and State of Massachusetts Medication
Administration Program (MAP) certification
• Valid driver's license
• Must be able to pass CORI background check

POSITION TITLE: 1:1 Student Support Person/ Life Skills Assistant
SUPERVISOR: Director of Life Skills
WORK YEAR/WEEKS: Year-round position
HOURS/DAYS OF JOB: Full Time, 40 hours per week Monday-Friday 7am-3pm
SALARY RANGE: $12.00 per hour to start
EMPLOYMENT: Non-Exempt -- Employment at Will
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
The 1:1 Student Support Person, under the guidance of the Director of Life Skills, will use structured intervention techniques to help the students learn life skills, which includes, but is not limited to: banking & budgeting, cooking, community independence, social skills, vocation. The 1:1 Student Support Person works directly with an individual with a disability in the classroom and out in the community. Be knowledgeable of the policies of the life skills department to support the mission and vision of BHMA.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION
Assists students and supports programmatic goals in the areas of independent and functional life skills for work
Assists teachers and related staff for the purpose of supporting lesson plans and/or developing students' skills.
Collects proper documentation for the purpose of meeting the required items for program participation and/or parent/guardian approval.
Follows student goals for the purpose of meeting the work education objectives.
Supports students in job search skills to help inform them of employment and career options.
Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential material for the purpose of documenting activities and/or providing reliable information to the school team, family and funding sources if involved
Communicate with staff via notes in the Best Notes communication log
Monitors student performance in a variety of sites according to program guidelines
Support students with music learning and facilitation as well as execution of basic work skills
Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and community forums as requested by supervisor
Work as a member of a team
Able to adapt to flexible nature of the position
A positive work attitude
Excellent communication and observation skills
Obtain/maintain in-service requirements as mandated by BHMA and its associated agencies
Attend Family Weekend activities and Open House events as requested
Attend mandatory staff training
Participate in BHMA employee evaluation process
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Experience with and sensitivity to individuals with special needs strongly preferred
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL
Knowledge of and experience with young adults who have special needs
Functional Computer skills
Strong teaching skills
Strong organizational skills
Strong written and oral communication skills
Certified in or able to obtain MA state Medication Administration Program (MAP) certification, CPR, First Aid, and other certification requirements as mandated by BHMA and its associated agencies
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS
Participate in weekly department and individual supervision meetings
Participate in semester progress meetings with students and families
Complete semester course evaluations
Compete self-evaluations at mid- year and end of year points
Support other program departments in teaching and learning as requested and appropriate
Participate in progress meetings or IEP/ISP meetings with students and family as requested by the supervisor
